With all the celebrating many of us will be doing this year, it’s always a good idea to know how to get over a holiday party food hangover. After all, so many of the celebrations during December are centered around feasting, indulging and drinking. It’s nearly impossible to get away from all the rich and decadent goodies to eat.

That said, with so many indulgences always around, the holiday party food hangover can become a significant problem. This means that for a significant amount of the holidays, we simply don’t feel very good. We feel sluggish, slightly nauseated, and have challenges with either constipation or diarrhea (or both).

Use These Tips to Skip the Holiday Party Food Hangover

Don’t Give Up

One of the biggest reasons we end up eating so much – and get stuck with a holiday party food hangover – is from giving up. We feel like we’re doomed to fail, so we don’t even try. While you should certainly enjoy the holiday season, this doesn’t mean that you can just eat everything you can get your hands on. If you’re finding yourself with eating regrets the next day, then giving up isn’t the right choice for you.

Don’t Be Hard on Yourself

If you do end up eating less healthfully, don’t let yourself dwell on negative feelings. Isn’t the holiday party food hangover enough punishment? Instead, consider each new day to be a fresh beginning. It’s the opportunity to take a closer look at what your body really needs. Instead of beating yourself up for what was already done, use the opportunity to be kinder to yourself as you move forward.

Drink Lots and Lots of Water

Whether you’ve been eating sugar, salt, fatty foods or alcohol, your body needs water. In fact, you’re likely dehydrated most of the time, contributing to your holiday party food hangover. Focus on drinking more water throughout the holidays. It will help to keep you energized and feeling better, it will help to reduce hunger pangs so you won’t feel as much of a need to snack, and it will help to keep your stomach settled. If you need even more help, boil some fresh, chopped ginger and sip the water.

Exercise

Exercising isn’t just great for you but it makes you feel good, too. The more you exercise, the fewer holiday party food hangover symptoms you’ll feel. Even a good brisk fifteen minute or half hour walk once or twice per day can make a difference.
