Just recently, we've seen a surge in smoking in adolescents and teens. Could it be the Hollywood influence? Everyone on screen seems to be smoking and it gives our youth the wrong impression of what is cool. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarettes contain nicotine--a powerfully addictive substance. Three-quarters of young people who use tobacco daily continue to do so because they find it hard to quit. Tobacco can kill you. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in this country. More than 400,000 Americans die from tobacco-related causes each year, and most of them began using tobacco before the age of 18.
Cut Back on Stress - Everyone’s lives have some level of stress in them and it’s impossible to cut it all out. But you can do things that help you relax, which will help relieve some of the pain of your daily stresses. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. (i.e.,Soak in a hot tub; walk on the beach or in a park; read a good book; visit a friend; play with your dog; listen to soothing music; watch a funny movie. Get a massage, a facial or a haircut. Meditate. Try to avoid events or people that you know will cause you stress.
Be positive! - The connection between thinking happy and being healthier cannot be ignored. Studies show that people who are more positive about themselves and about their lives are generally healthier. The brain affects the body.
Genetics vs. Your Health - There is a powerful link between genetics and health. If your parents and grandparents lived long healthy lives the odds are definitely in your favor to do the same. But just because one or both of your parents died young in ill health doesn't mean you cannot counteract the genetic pool handed you. Just remember to eat well, exercise, and be positive and good health will never be too far away.
