One of the best tips for weight loss is to actually control the amount that you eat. Before you can even think about cutting things out of your diet or adopt an entirely new eating habit, you should first start small by just saying "no" to seconds. Don't have the extra drink or the extra piece of break or dessert, etc. Learn regular control before you embark on a much bigger challenge.

Exactly. If you are having trouble with portion control, I would recommend using a smaller plate when you eat your meals. An 8 to 9 inch plate, one that is between the size of a side plate and a traditional dinner plate. Just fill it up, but don't pile a mound of food on it. You are likely to still be satisfied because you're eating a full plate, but you'll be eating less than normal. Also, once you're done eating, wait 20 minutes before you decide to get any additional food. You're likely to find that once digestion kicks in, you're satisfied and won't need more food anyway.

This is a very good point! I find it funny how some of my friends who want to lose weight, want to go on these crazy strict diets and expect them to work, when they have absolutely no willpower when it comes to saying no to an extra piece of dessert or some other type of junk that they really love.

I definitely think that portion control is important but at the same time I also think that some diets expect people to eat too little. I think it's more important for people to figure out how many calories they need in a day and work toward achieving that because while sometimes you can't always have seconds or that extra piece of bread, sometimes you can. You need to know what you're putting in your body. Only then can you know how much of it you should and shouldn't eat.
