  • fruits and veggies in winter?

    Can anyone recommend fruits and vegetables that are actually considered to be fresh in the winter time. I live somewhere that everything is frozen. The only fresh stuff comes from hothouses. So what should I be looking for in terms of the best fresh nutrition during the winter time when I’m really not going to be getting much that isn’t imported?

    I think that the best fruits and veggies in winter are pretty much the ones that you think about when wintertime rolls around.

    The harvest stuff that lasts, like squash and beets, is always good. Plus beets are a superfood and you can buy them when they’re in season. As long as you store them properly then you can just continue eating them for quite some time. I’ve had beets in my fridge for over a month and they are still perfectly fine. No different from when I bought them. Some dark leafies like kale, cabbage, swiss chard, and a few others are also great at this time of year. In terms of fruit, you’re likely not going to get anything local, but who can resist an orange or grapefruit that has been flown in at this time? They taste great!

      In the winter, pretty much everything is imported either from far away states or from other countries. So you may as well just get whatever appeals and that seems to have a lot of nutrients in it. Aim for a pretty good variety of foods and you’ll do yourself a lot more favors than if you just try to store the things that were local and limited. They may not be as good as in the summertime, but that’s just how it is.

        I guess this is the right way to look at it. If you live in a place where absolutely nothing can grow during the wintertime, then you may as well just go for whatever you want and eat a nice wide variety of foods that are as fresh as you can get them. You can also benefit from frozen veggies in the winter since they are frozen packed within a short time after they are picked, pretty much keeping all of the nutrition that you’d get if you bought them very fresh in the summer.
