  • Stop making excuses!

Every time I make an excuse of why I can’t eat as healthy (or why I’m “allowed” to eat another treat) or why I can’t go exercise, I tell myself that I not only have to do it, but I have to do a little extra on my diet that day.

    It sure works!

You're absolutely right. Excuses are one of the worst enemies to dieting. I love that you have a "consequence" system. Do you also have rewards when you're good? Then again, I guess the reward is weight loss.

The one thing that I find really complicated about excuses is that there are some times that you really do have an excuse that you can't get around.

For example, if you're at work and you are stuck in meetings and they bring in box lunches or some other kind of catering, then you really don't have much of a choice but to eat what is there unless you want to make a fuss - which isn't always good for a position or image on the job.

Also, if you've put in an 18 hour day, the last thing you really want is to have to do an aerobics workout.

So how do you know when you have a real reason not to follow your program, and when you are just making excuses and aren't even realizing what you're doing?

Deep down, you know the truth. So anytime you come up with an excuse, play the devil's advocate and give yourself a counter argument. If your counter argument is the best that you can do, but it's lame, then you know you're off the hook for advertising. If it's strong, get out there and move!

Excuses won't do good. Deep inside, you feel guilty not doing the right thing that you have to do.

Until I read this post i didn't even realize that I was making excuses. I thought that I was justifying quite reasonably. It's funny that until you really start paying attention to your habits, you may not even know you have them!

That is funny! Because you've said this, I'm going to start a habit before I chose that I will or will not exercise, or will or will not eat something, and see what my reasoning is for each. Since I'm a chronic diet failure, I bet I'm a chronic excuse maker, too!

self control is one of the most important lessons of weight loss. Stopping with the excuses is one of the best things to get out of that lesson.

That's really the lesson when it all comes down to it! It's so important that we start to recognize how important our health really is. It is the center of everything!

No excuse is good enough to justify taking poor care of ourselves. And remember that it's not just your body to ruin. If you get sick, then you make the lives of those you love much harder because they have to care for you, pay for you, and watch you suffer.
