  • Sleep tracking

    I think I might get a fitness/health tracker that can monitor/track my sleep. I want to improve my sleeping habits but I want to know how many zzz's I'm actually catching. Is this a good way to track my sleep? Are these trackers accurate and how do they work?

    A fitness tracker that tracks your sleep? That's different. I've never heard of that before. I don't see how something you can wear on your wrist would be able to tell you how much sleep you got.

      Some do track your sleep but they're not very accurate in my opinion. I had a misfit that told me I got 8 hours of sleep when I knew for certain I only got around 5...I personally wouldn't trust regular fitness trackers to monitor your sleeping patterns/habits.

        I agree with speeddemon. If you really want to investigate how much sleep you're getting, I would talk to your doctor if you have any concerns and ask him/her what methods they would recommend for sleep tracking. A fitness tracker is likely to say you've slept simply because you weren't moving and your heart rate has slowed to such a degree. Definitely not a reliable reading.

            No fitness trackers are not reliable sleep trackers. Also, I really think you'll know if you're getting enough rest or not based on how you feel during the day. If you're tossing and turning all night and you feel exhausted all day long, I'd say you need to improve your sleeping habits. You don't need a sleep tracker to tell you that Listen to your body.

              Alright, I guess that's a good point. I won't rely on a fitness tracker, so I guess I'll have to look into another way of tracking. I'm not at the point yet where I want to talk to my doctor. I know my sleep has been sucking, but it's not to the point where I feel like it's having a negative impact on my life. If it does reach that point I'll definitely talk to a professional. For now, however, my question here is simply out of curiosity and to see what other people think.

                I just want to add that another reason why I wouldn't want to use a fitness tracker to track my sleep, even if it was an effective tool for such a function, is because I don't want to wear a wearable 24/7. I honestly don't entirely trust the safety of these devices, especially when they're worn all the time. I personally only wear mine when I have to to reduce my chances of over-exposure to EMF radiation.

                  Really? Wearing these trackers can be dangerous? Are you sure that's not just a little paranoia talking?

                    That is a good point legendarytroy. I never thought about what wearing the device all the time might do to my body. I have heard that you're not really supposed to ear these gadgets on certain parts of your body (like near reproductive areas or close to your head. That said, I also don't think that they are as dangerous as some people think. I don't think enough radiation is emitted to cause any actual harm. If it was that harmful I'm pretty sure we'd all know about it and the people who manufactured the devices would have to stick massive warning labels on it.
