Any mobile app developers out there?

I was just wondering if there is an app that lets you scan barcodes or QR codes so that you can automatically record the calories that you've eaten from a product. I get that this won't work for produce, but at least for things that come in packages, it means that the mobile app can scan and enter the result automatically. It would save a lot of time. Also, people who love gadgets would adore using this kind of thing!

That sounds like it would be very complicated to make, since you'd have to have a way to enter all of the nutritional info for every product based on its barcode.

Have you seen the smart fridge devices that some brands have? Maybe LG or samsung, I can't remember. They let you build a shopping list through scans and through your smartphone. Pretty similar idea. Maybe one day fridges will help with dieting!

You're right. I bet an appliance or tech company like that could do very well with a companion app that would do something liek that but for weight loss.

That's smart. I bet those companies will be using that kind of option sometime int he future. I see QR codes on everything and barcodes are definitely already on practically every product out there. That should make it easier.

This would be great no matter the purpose of a diet. Even beyond weight loss, nutrition would be easier with scannable features like that. Good concept!

I wonder who you'd contact to try to encourage the creation of something like this. I can really see using barcode scanning as being a lot easier than recording all the numbers myself when it comes to a dieting journal.

It would be amazing if restaurants would play along with something like this. It's possible to track your own eating when it comes to grocery store products, even if it's not too convenient. If you want the info, a lot of it is there. When it comes to restaurants, it's a lot harder to judge.

I imagine that when it comes to the time that Google Glass and other kinds of wearable technology make their way into the scene, this type of thing won't be just an idea anymore. It will actually be a commonplace tool that we'd use to inform ourselves and to stock our fridges. We'll wonder how we managed to function without it like it was before the internet and the microwave. I know that I certainly lived without those things for quite a long time, but I have no recollection of what it actually felt like.

Out of curiosity, is there actually an app like this that already exists or is this just something that we're talkign about? Is there something anything like this, even if it doesn't have all of the features we've discussed?
