  • Gastric bypass or lipo suction

I'm wondering what the difference is between gastric bypass and lipo suction and which one is more effective for weight loss. Also, is one of these less dangerous than the other one?

As far as I know, gastric bypass is when they make your stomach smaller and liposuctin is when they actually suck out fat from your body. They're very difference procedures. In terms of weight loss, I think the gastric bypass would be more effective only because it makes your stomach smaller so you'll be inclined to eat less.

I think they're both good for weight loss, but which one is better is more based on what would be better for an individual. They both have their risks, complications and benefits.

        to answer your questions:

Gastric bypass shrinks your stomach, so you'll fell full with less food. Liposuction removes fat from beneath the skin.

Gastric bypass is a surgery primarily used to treat obesity (particularly morbid obesity). Liposuction is more of a cosmetic surgery than it is a weight loss surgery. Therefore, I personally think gastric bypass would likely be the more effective choice for someone who wants to lose weight.

Both come with their fair share of risks, dangers and complications. Neither one should be a first choice solution.

I didn't think liposuction was a weight loss treatment...

Okay, so after reading all of your comments I did a little research myself and found that gastric bypass is definitely a weight loss treatment option and liposuction is more for cosmetic purposes. That said, it's not actually regarded as a method for weight loss. Some weight reduction can naturally occur in the areas of the body from where fat cells are removed, but its done to asthetically improve a person's appearance and isn't about helping them reduce their actual weight.

Thanks for clarifying that cujo1992. I have always wondered if liposuction was more than just cosmetic surgery. I guess it isn't a weight loss treatment.

No problem Beth. I know, sometimes it gets really confusing trying to figure all this stuff out
