  • Cabbage Soup Diet

How unhealthy is the cabbage soup diet really? I’ve read the ingredients for the soup and to me it looks like there’s a lot of healthy, nutritious things in it, and you’re allowed to eat as much of it as you want so you don’t go hungry.

I know it’s not meant for long-term weight loss, but if I just want to drop a lot of weight in the next week and then continue on in a healthy weight after that, would it be very bad for me if I used the cabbage soup diet to do it?

I heard this was pretty unhealthy. I can see if you were just going to do it for one day it'd be alright. It'd certainly be better than going out for a fast food hamburger and fries or something like that. But for a week, you're not getting any variety to your meals so you'll be missing out on a lot of what you need. I guess you'd have to take a lot of supplements to compensate for that and you should probably get your doctor's help for that because it's also easy to overdose on vitamins and that can be toxic.

It'd be nice if weight loss were as easy as eating a soup, though, right! :)

I actually tried the cabbage soup diet for three days. Here's what I noticed about it:

      - the soup itself doesn't taste too bad. When I started off, I was convinced I'd be fine with it for the week I'd intended to use it.
      - it makes cooking for yourself extremely fast and easy. I just made a huge batch and froze it in little microwavable bowls, so when it was time to eat, I just nuked one.
      - by the third day, you are VERY tired of cabbage soup
      - you do lose weight fast, but you start getting tired and cranky.
      - i lost four pounds by the end of the week. That was pretty great, but I was doing it for a wedding I was going to be in, and it meant that by the time it was the wedding day, I was fatigued the whole day. So my body looked alright but my face looked droopier than it should!
      - I have never recommended it to my friends...enemies are another thing haha j/k

I wouldn't go near this diet. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Anything that doesn't encourage variety, that doesn't encourage exercise, and that has extremely low calories won't help you in the short term and could actually set you back in the long term.

Here's what I think about the cabbage soup diet. No, I don't think that it is a healthy diet if you follow it to the letter. No diet is healthy if it makes you eat the exact same thing for every meal every day. But the funny thing about the cabbage soup diet is that its recipe makes a pretty nutritious, low cal, tasty soup!

So what I think is the best way to take advantage of this is to make a giant batch of it and put it into those plastic reusable bowls with lids. Freeze a good stack of them so that you have individual portions of it. Then, when you know you're going to be eating a meal that's a bit high on the calorie side for supper, for example, then you can nuke one of the bowls of your soup for lunch and you won't bust your calorie limit and you'll get something healthy and tasty!

It's not bad over the short term if you're just looking to drop off a few pounds over a week, for example. I wouldn't live it as a long term weight loss lifestyle or anything. If you're just doing it for a while, it's really not that bad. It's certainly a lot healthier than eating at fast food restaurants, and at least you lose weight in the process, instead of gaining!

Cardio really is the way to do it. There was just a study that even showed that people who do cardio lose a huge amount more weight than people who do strength training exercises. While both are important, it's the cardio that blasts the fat

If you are otherwise healthy and you have read and are willing to accept some of the side effects described here (tired, irritable, etc.) then go for it. Doing it on a temporary basis shouldn't hurt you.

I agree. It's not something long term and it doesn't taste bad. As long as you're willing to undergo a few unpleasant symptoms, then it won't hurt for a healthy person to do this diet for a weekend or so. Not too much more than that, though, or there are drawbacks to weight loss afterward from a slower metabolism.

It's not a great diet, but it's super easy to make and it freezes well. Terrific diet friendly lunch!
