I'm seeing "Grains of Paradise" in a lot of OTC diet pills now. Is this the new garcinia cambogia fad? Does anyone know what the claims are associated with this ingredient and weight loss? While I imagine there is no proof that it is actually effective or even safe, I am wondering what the potential side effects are. I'd far rather take something that may or may not work than take something that may or may not work and be dangerous.

From what I understand, I think it's similar to ginger and adds a bit of kick and heat to stuff. It's used to spice up food and has also been used as a natural medicine for digestive and intestinal health and even diabetes. In regard to weight loss, I think it is believed to help with thermogenesis and metabolism. That said, there's no proof that it's effective. Personally, I think it's a good herb for foods and things and maybe it might be alright for treating mild digestive discomfort in the way that ginger can, but in regard to its ability to be useful for weight loss, I don't think it offers any real benefit.
