In my opinion, if you eat a healthy, well balanced diet, in reasonable portions, then you don’t need to count calories, count fats, or go to any extremes. Eating healthy means that you’re primarily eating vegetables and whole grains, and that it has some lean protein. When you eat that kind of diet, the occasional fruit or treat – within reason – won’t set you back at all. Get to love healthy food and you’ll never have to diet again!

It is still a good idea to monitor what you're eating even when you're choosing healthy foods. That will help you to get the right balance. It's not just a matter of eating something that is healthy and keeping your portion size under control. If that were the case, we could just eat carrots for the rest of our lives and be fine. There is a nutritional balance that needs to be achieved with proteins, fats, and carbs, as well as individual nutrients. This needs to balance not only nutritionally but also in calorie count or it's not possible to lose weight.
Equally, though, you're right that by making healthy choices, you have a way better shot at losing weight with less effort.

I agree that if you eat a healthy, well balanced diet, and you stick to it for most days, then you're automatically setting yourself on the right path to making sure that you're doing everything that you need to lose weight. It's not about a specific plan that won't last. It's about a lifestyle.
