I am going camping this labor day long weekend and it is one of the hardest times/places for me to eat healthy. I was looking around for some healthy food ideas to take camping and weight watchers has a few really good & easy ideas!
Pack pre-packaged veggies. If they are washed and cut and already to serve this cuts down on heaps of prep time. To add a little flavor bring some powdered dressing and mix it with low fat mayo or sour cream.
Chili or beans! These are great to heat up over the camp fire and have a lot of protein and nutrients. To cut the calories per serving just add in a can of tomatoes. Pile on the veggies but go easy on the low fat cheese and sour cream.
Trail mix. Nuts and dried fruits are great for an afternoon pick-me-up or when you are feeling snacky out on the trail. Choose a trail mix with all-natural ingredients. (No, shiny, candy-coated chocolates don't count!) A mix of nuts, seeds and dried fruits can add protein and natural sugars to your diet. But remember, don't overdo it: eat only one handful at a time or, better yet, pre-portion them into containers so you don't over eat.
Instead of making hot dogs and bugers, make veggie burgers or tofu dogs. Healthy skewers are also a quick fix for supper: Simply spear a mix of veggies like peppers and onions alongside lean meats, such as chicken chunks or homemade turkey meatballs and throw them on the bbq.
Instead of bringing juice and drinks just bring water! Use crystal light if you want to add a little flavor to your water.
As far as smores go, everyone likes this nice tasty campfire treat so instead forgoing the treat completely, just bring enough chocolate and marshmallows for each camper to have one or two pieces. DONT bring the giant Costco package of chocolate whatever you do
