I've had the program P90x for a few years. I've went through the system several times now.
This is definitely a program designed to get results, and fast.
I have never been more than 35 pounds overweight, but I have a friend who was about 70 pounds overweight, and he did p90x.
Here's my personal opinion based on my own experience and my friends:
If you follow the diet plan included with the program, and you stick to the workout schedule, you will definitely get great results.
Everytime I've done the program, I would see results by the 3rd week, and by the end of the 2nd month (it's a 3 month program), I would be back in shape for the summer (visible abs, tone arms, bigger chest, etc).
I know, for someone who is really overweight, this 'extreme fitness' seems like a bad idea, being its built around pushups, pullups, etc....
My friend did not let this stop him. He followed the diet, and he started the workouts. He could not do a single pullup, and only a couple pushups when he started. Thats ok though.
Tony shows you how to do the exercise if that is the case. Basically, you'll be doing assisted pullups or lat pull downs with bands, and you can do simplified versions of all the pushups, by using your knees. The leg and arm stuff is basically using bands or free weights.
He could not keep up with the routines. He could not do very many reps on many of the exercises. That's ok too. This 'extreme fitness' was more than he was used to, so he started seeing results quicker than I ever did.
After the first month, he had lost I think around 15 pounds, and he was getting stronger. He could do over 10 pushups, and even a couple non-assisted pullups.
He went through the entire 90 days, and he felt great. He was still overweight, but he was stronger, he has taken up bike riding, and still stays active.
To get to his goal weight, he still needs to go through the program 1 or 2 more times, but he's a med student and he has gotten too busy to start again.
Regardless, he knows it works. I know it works. What he told me he enjoyed most about it was that it allowed him to get gym results while doing a home fitness program.
This is a true story. I'm not here to promote p90x. I'm here to say that from my personal experience, I would recommend p90x to anyone who prefers a home fitness program over a gym membership.
And also, if you think you're too overweight to do this program think again. You will learn to push hard and do what your capable of, and will get incredible results.
