I want to know how much weight you can actually lose on Atkins if you follow the diet to the letter. Also, is this a long-term plan or is it only for a short term. I've never been clear on whether or not this is meant to be a forever lifestyle or only a diet you follow for a brief period until you get your weight under control.

How much can you really lose?

according to dr. atkins you can lose 6 - 10 pounds in the first two weeks which slows to about 1 - 3 pounds a week once you've entered the ongoing weight loss phase. During the pre-maintenance phase you can lose a maximum of 1 pound per week. As for how long you follow the diet, I think it's pretty long term. I'm pretty sure it's a lifestyle.

I would imagine you could probably lose as much as you want as long as you watch your calorie intake and exercise a lot. I could be wrong, but like most diets, following Atkins should be about controlling not just what you eat, but how much you eat.
