  • Diet for kids

My crazy cousin is thinking about putting her 10 year old kid on Atkins. I told her I don't think that's the best idea. Still, what I'm wonder is does anyone know if there is a kid-version of this type of diet? BTW I'm expecting the answer to be no and, for the record, I am discouraging my cousin from her idea as well as telling her to ask her kid's doctor. In other words, I'm looking for answers about Atkins and kids. No lectures please :)

Oh geeze, I don't think there is an Atkins diet for kids. Your cousin should listen to you and talk to her child's doctor about his/her health if weight loss is important to his/her health. If your cousin is reading this I just want to say - LISTEN TO YOUR COUSIN SPEEDDEMON

No. Atkins is not for children. Honestly, I feel that the diet shouldn't be for anyone...but children are definitely a "no". If a child needs to lose weight, they should definitely be put on a proper plan and a medical professional should be consulted to track their progress. If you can't take your kid to a doctor for some reason and they don't actually have a medical problem of which you're aware...up their exercise and reduce the amount of junk they're eating. Do it with them to help encourage it as a healthy and positive lifestyle.

THANK YOU PAPLO! I'm totally going to show her this LOL. That said, on the plus side, it looks like she is abandoning the idea thankfully...

Glad to hear that. I mean it's one thing to mess up your own body by trying different diets, it's another to do it to a kid. They're still growing and they're smaller. They're nutrition requirements are way different! Definitely talk to your doctor if weight is a problem for your child.

Yes! I agree. Also, since it is a child, hopefully a little extra activity and a slight change in diet or calorie quantity should be all there is to it to help bring weigh down to healthier levels.
