  • You'll look and feel great - what more motivation do you need?

I've been dieting and finding myself losing motivation to keep on track. It is particularly hard to keep going when you hit a weight loss plateau - no matter what you do you can't lose weight. It's so frustrating. So I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and complaining to a friend of mine and she just looked at me and said "You look and feel great! What more motivation do you need?"

I thought about this and you know what - she's right. I needed to change my mindset from feeling that dieting means depriving myself, to appreciating the health benefits that dieting is giving myself?

Anyway, don't I have dieting to thank for:

    A smaller butt?
I can fit into a nice pair of jeans?
    More Energy?
    Less Indigestion?
    Less Heartburn?
    Lots more self-confidence?

You see, we forget about these things, don't we fellow dieters? We are so busy worrying about giving up candy, cream and peanut butter, that we forget about giving up the tiredness and the discomfort and all the other nasty things we put up with when we're fat.

That's why we find staying motivated while dieting difficult. We think it means giving up nice things. We think it means suffering. But this is nonsense.

The truth is, dieting means freedom. Freedom from embarrassment, freedom from tiredness and freedom from discomfort.

So, if you are on a diet, don't see it as something negative. See it as your private escape route to a new slim world. Because that's what it is.

So girls, it's time to change our attitudes! Stop focusing on all the things you're giving up, and start looking forward to bouncing out of bed in the morning and then bouncing all through the day. Because this is exactly what will happen when you get slim.

Great motivational post. As in your post, my motivation was what I was going to gain. When I looked at the potential Gains and compared them to all the ways I was miserable, I perked up for another successful day of achieving my goal.

Why is it far from possible? I have learned that the human being is capable of far more then we give ourselves credit. You can do anything you put your mind to, with enough determination. Or as my husband would say, "if your as stubborn as my wife." LOL Hang in there and who knows what might come out of it.

My personal motivation is simply to look better and be healthy. I have had so many health problems because of my weight. Also, I can't seem to function well with all these excess pounds. I want to be able to run without hyperventilating thereafter, jog without catching my breath every block, and swim wearing appropriate swimwear. I used to wear just shirt and some baggy pants at work and it considerably decreases my self-esteem. I want to wear something smart and elegant everyday and I know I can achieve it when I have the courage to do so. and I can only gain that courage when I lose some weight. I know that esteem can be gained by choice, and that i don't have to be handsome and all but i just feel confident when i look good. it's a personal opinion though...

Being and staying healthy should be a motivation too. Most people truly wake up and decide to turn their lives around and seriously lose weight when they get a serious healthy related wake up call. This can be very dreadful if the wake up call you get is too late for you to do anything.

People who are already in their 30s need to be more conscious of their weight and health a lot more because this is the age that the onset of health issues usually come.

Looking good and slim is a good temporary motivator. But the longer term motivator should be health.

I agree with you that the best motivation should come from thyself. But we cannot judge people who are having trouble finding that motivation and keeping it. I went through all the stages of finding the motivation and losing it in the end. There must be some other way rather than convincing yourself that YES, THIS SHIRT MUST FIT ME BY THE END OF THE MONTH.

Their will be many many reason behind a person to reduce weight and those reason may be a motivating and encouraging need behind them... but here are some tips for people who really dont have any specific reason but just want to stay fit and healthy....

1= Find a reason to be motivated ... something for you, not just your typical "I want to lose weight." Do it because it makes you feel good, you see progress or you want to, do it to reach another goal that isn't attainable at this time! Do it for you!!! Write it down!!!

2=Start slowly. Maybe you want to do a 5K but it seems to far off right now, stay focused, find a beginner training schedule online and stick with it! Join a running or walking group, many running and walking stores have groups that meet several times throughout the week and you'll meet people with the same questions and goals as yourself!

3=Start your own group or invite a few close friends to do something with you once a week! Maybe you want to try out a cycling class or that new step class but didn't know who to go with, go by yourself, branch out and experience something new! It's exciting and fun!

4=Don't get discouraged! If you miss a week because you are on vacation, jump back on the bandwagon and continue!!! Just think of it as a break and not the end! It's not a do-over, it's a continuation!

5=Set small goals, done a 5K? How about moving up to a 10K?? or a 5 mile race? Maybe some interval training? Haven't started yet? Walk around the block or join the Y or a group at work!

6=Diversity it key! Mix it up a little! Try a new class, rent a new DVD or talk to someone new! Getting lost in the same old game can get you bored in a rut ... trying new and expanding your horizons keeps you motivated and positive!

7=Take a break! Just feeling exhausted or overwhelmed? Take a break for the day or do something less strenuous and enjoy yourself!

hope this things may prove useful to you in someway... keep posting more.. tc
