  • Don't forget rewards

When you meet your goals, even if it’s mini-goals and not the whole shebang, don’t forget to treat yourself to something great. It’ll help drive you forward.

If it weren’t for the reward I promise myself every weekend, I don’t think I could stick to a diet

This is absolutely true. A diet and weight loss program are nothing without the rewards. If it wasn't for the rewards, I'd never lose any weight because that's what is driving me.

I try to set mini-goals for myself. I set a really small one every week, a slightly bigger one every two weeks, and every month, it's slightly more, and the reweards suit it appropriately, so I get one good reward per month etc. It sounds complicated but it's really not, it's just hard to say how I do it.

My reward is bacon. Once per month, I get as many slices as I want in a single meal (usually that's six haha). I've done it twice now and boy do I push myself as the "deadline" approaches.

Use reasonable rewards. If sixteen pieces of bacon is your reward you'll only set yourself back.

Rewards are an awesome way to make sure that your motivation never goes anywhere but up.

Rewards are good but make sure that you're doing each step toward weight loss to reach your goal, too. If rewards are your only motivation, you'll fail over time.

I guess you have a point there, Jan. It's just hard to stay motivated unless you give yourself a reward, especially when you're really not losing a huge amount of weight. 1 or 2 pounds every week might be good, but it feels like forever.

It might feel like forever but if you look at the short term goal instead of looking off into the distance at how far you have to go, you'll feel a lot better about your short achievements. You need to do it, so you may as well do it in small batches that will keep you feeling positive :)

Small rewards in the short term and big rewards in the long term can be a very helpful way to keep yourself motivated. Just don't forget to be motivated to actulaly achieve your goal, too, not just get the reward hahaha

The key to really good dieting rewards is to make sure that they don't have to do with dieting. So don't make it a food rewrad or a day off exercising. Make it a bit of extra spending allowance or some time to pamper yourself.

I have a goal that I am working towards and then I stick with it.
