  • Don't obsess

When you're trying to lose weight and you're watching what you eat, we all tend to obsess over how much calories, fat, etc. that we're eating. While at first it can be motivational to track all these things, it doesn't take too long before it gets really, really frustrating and you just want to quit.

Instead of worrying about all that stuff, focus instead on being realistic with yourself. Don't give up bread because you're not suppose to eat it, simply reduce the amount that you eat of it. You'll be able to handle changing your diet a lot more when you don't give yourself ultimatiums or feel like you have to sacrifice everything that you enjoy.

Good advice Beth. I'm definitely guilty when it comes to obsessing over calories. It's hard not to focus on how these things though. When you get used to watching what you eat and you're constantly telling yourself what you should and shouldn't be eating, it starts to be all you can think about. But, yeah, it does get old after a while until you just say "screw it" and give up. I think I'm just going to try eating less.

I get that you don't want to obsess, but I think you sort-of have to at the start, especially if you've never watched what you've eaten before or tracked your calories. So yes, while I don't think it's a good idea to go overboard, establishing some kind of routine is important.

I have to agree with madscinetist. I think you kinda need to obsess so you get yourself on track. If I don't make tracking calories my top priority and always think about that when I eat, I'd be the size of a house!

I think you need to definitely think about it and establish a routine, but obsession is taking it a bit too far. Obsession can lead to negative feelings and stress that you don't want, which can unmotivate you and make you want to quit. What I'm saying is you need to find the right balance without over doing it. Think without overthinking. Essentially, know when to stop and when to push yourself. Avoid perfection.
