Are there a lot of high calorie foods that Vegans or Vegetarians eat? I was under the impression that most vegans and vegetarians don't have fat problems. Most of the Vegans I know are pretty thin. I've been thinking of going Vegan to help with my weight problem. Is this just wishful thinking? Am I still going to have to avoid high calorie foods?

Oh you can definitely gain weight as a vegan or vegetarian. There are lots of carbs that are animal-free products, pastas, sugars, breads, etc. All of these can be very fattening. As for vegetarians who eat dairy...well, cheese, butter, milk, yogurt, ice cream, all high in fat. You still need to watch what you eat.

Aside from carbs, other foods that are high in calories and fats include avacados, oils and nuts. All vegitarian and vegan friendly foods. I find that for Vegans, especially it's not so much what you eat that you need to take care with, but how much of it you do eat.

Also, Tara, you're right about the oils and the nuts. While good for you they sure do pack a lot of fats and calories. I guess you really could blimp up if you don't watch what you eat when you're a vegan, too.
