  • Best lettuce

Okay, I have a question about lettuce. What's the best lettuce that offers the most nutritional value and isn't just a glorified source of water, like iceberg? I want to start eating more salads, but I want to make sure I'm using the best stuff.

Romaine and spinach are my go to.

I know what you mean about picking lettuce. I used to think that anything green was the best, but it turns out that's not the case. I personally like kale, red lettuce, spinach and arugula.

What's wrong with iceberg? It has no nutritional value? I pretty much thought all lettuce was good for you.

It's not that it's bad for you, it just isn't loaded with nutrients and it doesn't offer much fiber. It has a high water content which makes it great for hydration and a super choice in hot weather. It also does provide nutrients like folate, calcium, potassium and vitamin C. Still, if you want lettuce that's going to give you more fiber and super nutrients, this one is pretty low on the list. Romaine, kale, spinach and other darker greens tend to be better.

Personally, my favorite salads are those that combine a mixture of different lettuce leaves, including iceberg, because I love the refreshing crisp taste and crunch iceberg provides, giving the salad more life and fun :D

Me, too! The more I mix them the more I enjoy the salad. I also find that it's what I add to it that makes it good, like nuts, feta, lots of vegetables, apple and a nice vinegrette! Adding chicken breast, eggs or tuna is also great :D
