Are the reality shows are beneficial to lose weight???

  • #2
I admit that I do watch some of the weight loss reality shows, like Biggest Loser and Losing It with Jillian. I have mixed feeling about how beneficial these shows are for those of us who want to lose weight. For starters, the programs on these shows are much more extreme than what most of us would be able to do in our daily lives. As well, the participants have access to professional trainers and nutritionalists that motivate them and guide them every step of the way. For these reasons, I think that these shows can mislead some people into expecting too much from their own weight loss efforts.

This said, I have learned new techniques about nutrition and exercising from these shows and have applied them in my own life to make my own dieting experience better. I think that as long as we remember that these are in fact TV shows and not "real life" and we keep realistic weight loss goals for ourselves then these shows can be of some benefit.

Of course, spending that hour getting some exercise instead of sitting on the sofa watching a show about people losing weight would benefit us most of all :)

I like the Biggest loser reality show. I get inspiration from it. I can relate to most of them. I also get tips from it and apply it to my weightloss journey.

        Reality shows

I love the Biggest Loser and have to admit I have set and ate ice cream while watching. As far as this show goes they give a lot of tips, but in reality these contestants are there with Dr.s, nutritionist, trainers and all the support they need. I not sure how much I can get from the show, but I've wrote the tips down and going to try to incorporate them in my journey.

Television shows has 2 effects on its viewers, either they will be inspired by it or resent themselves more for not being too skinny, too pretty, or in the BIGGEST LOSER"S case, not too successful in losing shedding off fats. I must admit that I'm more of the latter.I resent for not being able to participate in the game. I hate those obese people who seem to lose weight so easily than me and whom I have witnessed in my own eyes transformed so easily.

I watched Asia's biggest loser too and I though to myself that they are too lucky to lose weight and win so many prizes along the way of achieving their goals while I am stuck in my apartment eating low calorie meals watching them cry in victory.

But i did grow up. I now know that this cant go on. If I want to lose weight, then I must do something to get started. I started eating less junk foods and sweets and try to work my butts out in the gym whenever I have the luxury of time. I still watch the biggest loser though and make it as my inspiration. If those people who are pounds fatter than I am can lose so much weight in such a short period of time, them why can't I right?

            Hi Janica,
Everyone says that I lost weight easy and with hardly any effort (everyone except those who know me really well). This journey is like any other in life. Some work harder in private then public, some will refuse anything that is not fit for their bodies in order to make sure that they succeed. Not only do I refuse to eat any junk food, soft drink, fatty foods, white breads, condiments, sugar or anything with over 400 calories but what I do eat is allot less then I ever did before. Not easy I promise. I am tempted everyday but I look at myself then remember how my health was getting and I push myself forward. 100lbs in 5 months is awesome but not easy. I just choose to make it look that way.
Not trying to discourage you or change your mind about the easy looking weight loss. Just putting it out there.... no matter what path we choose in order to regain our life's: It will take work. Well worth it in the end. Best wishes to you on your journey. Wish me luck I still have a 100 lbs to go.

Im sorry, but I disagree with you.
              1. Losing weight is a struggle, if it wasn't you wouldn't be on this site.
              2. These are real people with real problems (mental, physical and on top of that very over weight). I found it encouraging that I was not alone in my joints hurting, chest and lungs aching and all the other small things that thin peeps take for granted. It also shows that weight can be caused by events in our past / present, until we face them we may never understand the drive to eat.
              3. Bet you watch other TV reality shows. To me, it is not shame or fame. If it helps anyone get ahead in life then so be it.

I thank you for speaking your mind, it is always nice to see different views on life issues.

I love weight loss reality shows like supersized vs superskinny, biggest loser, losing it with jillian (lovely) etc.
They motivate me and there are actually a lot of useful advice to be found there if you pay attention, even though many events are staged in those realities the gist is good :)
