If I wanted to eat a salad as a meal, what's the best way to do it to ensure I'm getting great nutrients and I fill up without packing on the calories?

Add a lot of veggies to your salad, put in some fruit, a small handful of nuts, half an avocado, a bit of chicken breast, a couple boiled eggs, chick peas, etc.. Essentially, you'll want to add some protein with the fiber and a bit of good for you fat. Also I wouldn't necessarily include avocado, nuts, eggs, chick peas and chicken all in the same salad, These are just ideas of what you can add.

When I make salad as my dinner, I use different types of lettuce, a load of different veggies, chicken, a hint of cheese and a few homemade croutons. I then top it all off with the lightest vinegar dressing I have. Sometimes I'll even make my own if I'm not too lazy. When I don't want chicken, I use eggs instead. The trick is to basically load up your plate with as much good as you can and then add a few little treats on top to make it tasty and fun but that won't kick up your fat and calories so much that you negate the low-cal and high-fiber benefits of the salad.

It's all about making sure you don't choose high-fat protein and making sure that you don't use a dressing that will eliminate your efforts in keeping your calories down. This is surprisingly harder than you think because so many salad dressing are high in fat and calories, even when you only use them in small amounts.
