  • Weight gain eye pressure

I have glaucoma in my family and I don' t have it yet (although I am regularly checked for it). However, I am overweight (and so are many people in my family) can excess weight increase the pressure in my eyes and make it more likely for me to get glaucoma?

Um...no I don't think it does. I know you might think this because being overweight can lead to higher blood pressure, but I"m pretty sure blood pressure and eye pressure are not the same and are not always effected by the same factors. Obviously, if this is a major concern for you, definitely talk to your doctor about it!

Yeah, I also don't think weight gain is going to do anything good or bad for your eyes...at least not in any direct way. I think that if your eye pressures really are worrying you, however, bring this up with your eye doctor. It's probably a good idea to have your pressure monitored, regardless of what size you might be. Glaucoma doesn't just effect only one group of people after all. it can effect anyone of any age, any gender, ethnicity or size.

I know what you're wondering about this and I think it's a good question because I know that certain things in your diet can cause your eye pressure to raise, like caffeine, for instance. Also, even though blood pressure and eye pressure are not the same, it does seem like they are linked in some way, especially when lots of medications that you're not supposed to take if you have high blood pressure you're also not supposed to take if you have glaucoma. Of course, the only person who can really answer this is your eye doc. I would have a very frank discussion with him or her and express my worries clearly. Trust what they say and follow it.

Yeah, you've pretty much read my mind freddyboy. I feel like you get my concern and you know what you're talking about with eye pressures. Have you or someone you know had experience with glaucoma? Anyway, thanks for weighing in on this for me and I do intend to have a frank discussion with my eye doctor during my next visit. Whatever the case may be, I just home that it turns out I have nothing to worry about.
