  • No more sunshine

Hey everyone. I've just been diagnosed with a skin condition that requires me to stay out of the sun or fully cover up if I'm outside. I'm concerned that I won't get enough Vitamin D and even though my doctor recommends that I take supplements (which I do) I'm not entirely confident the supplements work.

What are other good sources of vitamin D?

Aww I'm sorry to hear that brightstar! There are lots of foods that are good sources of vitamin D if you don't want to take supplements. Mushrooms, oily fish like trout, tofu, fortified dairy products, fortified cereals, hard boiled eggs, pork are just some great sources that can be high in vitamin D :)

The supplements do work, as long as you're ingesting the calcium, too. That said, as for food sources, so many things are fortified with vitamin D now, from milk to juice. Just take a loot at the ingredients.

I honestly think the easiest way to get it is through supplements. It always ensures that you'll have enough in case you don't eat foods that naturally contain it or are fortified with it.

I agree with char. Supplements really are the best way to go unless you can make certain you're getting enough through the foods and beverages you ingest in your daily diet.

Thanks Gina. This is really helpful. That's what I wanted to know :) I'll look into those foods, too!

I really think supplements should do the trick, no? I'm sure your doctor would know. I think it may be difficult to obtain all the vitamin D you need from foods alone.
