I've always been prone to hiccups, but lately I've been noticing that I have them more than usual and they're really annoying! I don't know what I'm doing that is causing them to happen more often. Could it be that I'm over-eating? Can that cause hiccups? If not, what else may be bringing them on.

Are my hiccups a sign of over-eating?

They could be a sign of a lot of things and over-eating or eating too fast could be one of them. I'd recommend eating slower to start and track every time they occur. If they're happening even when you haven't eaten in a while, food might not be the trigger, or at least not the only contributing factor. Two other major causes for hiccups is acid reflux and anxiety.

I bet its either eating too fast or acid reflux. Some people have acid reflux without experiencing heartburn. They get it in the form of hiccups. It may also be how your breathing or even swallowing. Like Speeddemon said, the best idea is to pay attention to your eating habits, the foods you're eating and pay attention to when the hiccups occur and even for how long. This might help you pinpoint at least one of the potential culprits.

You might be breathing weird. What I mean by that is you could be holding your breath and swallowing air more than you realize it. This could be something that you naturally do or it might be that you're stressed. I find that I hiccup a lot more and get acid reflux when I'm stressed. That said, I wouldn't worry about your hiccups. If you suddenly just started experiencing them, it'll likely just go away.

I've taken some of your advice. I've tried slowing down my eating and I've worked on not over-eating. I think it's helping a bit, but I don't think that's the only problem. So I'm not thinking my hiccups are caused by acid reflux, since they can just start up out of nowhere. Maybe it has something to do with the way I'm breathing, or maybe I am more stressed than I realized, even though I don't really feel like I am. After New Year when things go back to normal I'll see if there is any change. Thanks for your support.

I've been experiencing my own battle with hiccups and I'm also stumped as to what might be causing it. I find it so embarrassing sometimes. I'm completely fine and then suddenly out of no where a hiccup will just burst out from my throat. I hate it.
