I've been working on my exercise and diet and trying to be reasonable about it. WHen I plateau enough, I cut down calories a bit more or boost up my workouts a bit more, depending on what seems appropriate for me at the time. THe thing is, every time i do it, I feel like I hit this wall where I feel like crap, I feel sore, sick, and just overall bad for a day or two before things pick up again. Why does that happen?

That's really odd. Maybe you're pushing yourself too hard when you bump things up. Maybe think about changing either your exercise or your diet but not both at once. Do one, get accustomed to it, then do the other. That way, you'll know you're staying in the right zone for you and if there's a problem, it's easier to track down.
