  • Hi, I'm the new guy

Hi everyone. I’m Bruce. I have been battling with weight problems for some time because I have moderate-to-severe asthma that makes it very difficult for me to exercise in any effective way. I’ve already lost a lot of weight through the use of prescription drugs, but my doctor doesn’t won’t prescribe them to me anymore because it’s not safe to use them for an extended time, especially with the other medications I’m using.

So now I’m looking for ways to keep losing the weight without the use of prescriptions and without a lot of extreme exercising. I’m hoping to find a lot of good techniques here since a friend recommended this forum to me, and she said she found it useful here.

So it’s nice to meet you all, and I hope this will help to make the difference.

Hi Bruce! Welcome to the forums! Sorry to hear about your asthma. Are you able to do any walking at all? Even if you walk for 1/2 hr 3x per week it can significantly reduce chance of heart disease and cholesterol. There are a tone of health benefits to walking, including weight loss, and it's easy and low impact. I walk a lot actually as part of my exercise regime.

Hi Bigben and Lydiapurple. Thanks for the greetings.

Bigben: glad to hear it. That's why I'm here. I hope I can get a lot from the info here and that I might be able to add a thing or two every now and then.

Lydiapurple: I'm working up to that. Currently I can walk for around 20 minutes without it getting too bad and I've built up to that from just over 10 minutes. The problem is that I can't go very fast. I realize that it's better to do something than nothing at all, but when you're just out strolling, you're note exactly getting a massive cardio workout. So I try to get out for one 20 minute walk when I'm feeling ambitious, or two 10 minute walks when it's not a good day or when the air quality is bad. Once a week, I also do one floor of stairs in my building before taking the elevator the rest of the way.

Any more suggestions are more than welcome!

That is a great start Bruce! When I first started walking, I could only do about 10 minutes as well before I needed to rest. It was a wake up call. Now I can walk 3 miles and can do it in about 50 minutes. I do that a few times/week and on my off days I go to the gym. I do like to go swimming as well, I do aquafit and that is really great as it's low impact and you can kinda go at your own pace. (no one can see what you are doing under the water lol so if you need a break just do it) I do try and take the stairs when I can as well. It all ads up!
Also I wrote a post a while back about easy to do exercises that you can do at home- maybe it can be of some use to you? http://www.weight-loss-center.net/we...-gym-home.html

hey lpowers5 I know what you are going thru! I was at a total stand still for months. I just recently started the Dukens diet (it's been two days and I have already lost 5 lbs!) The first phase of the diet is a real weight buster. You only eat protein for 5 days in a row and it really kick starts your metabolism. You should check it out. You can eat as much as you want, just have to stick to certain foods. I will find the link... here it is: Link

oh ya and 3 lbs is nothing. You will have that gone in no time.
