I just read a great study that shows that omega 3 helps with weight loss but it keeps your brain nice and fatty so that you can prevent alzheimer's disease and slow it once it's there: Alzheimer's: Diet patterns may keep brain from shrinking
It's a good reminder that even though we want to reduce fats in our bodies and we want to watch out for bad fats in the foods that we eat, it's still important to recognize that there are fats that are essential to our health.
Since the brain is made up of a lot of fat, we have to make sure that even if we're on a low-fat diet, the good fats are still getting their way in.
It's also a good thing to remember that what we're doing now will have an impact on our health in the future, so it's probably a bad idea to take on those really strict or dramatic diets that cause very fast or strange weight loss. You never know what it'll do to you in the future.
yup we need to eat lots of the "good" fats like those found in avocados and cold water fish.
I'm so glad you just posted this. I never realized that it was cold water fish that has high levels of good fats in them
I've always known that fish like salmon have lots of omega 3, but I just never put 2 and 2 together. This will make it a lot easier to make the right shopping choices at the grocery store
I find omega 3 to be a fascinating substance. For so long, we were told "fats are bad" and so the goal was to just cut them all out of your diet if you wanted to lose weight or be healthy.
Now, the understanding of "good" fats, such as the omegas, is really turning things around. I used to avoid eating salmon because it's a fatty fish! Now I eat it at least once per week because it's doing so much for my health.
This study is just one more thing that points out that taking any diet to the extreme (for example, cutting out ALL carbs or fats) may seem like a good idea now, but in the future, we might find out that we've been cutting something very important.
Moderation, and overall nutrition really is the basis of the safest health or weight loss diet.
Fish oil supplements may actually help to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Many studies have already proven that people who are taking fish oil supplements prevents brain from shrinking. Those scientists find ways to prevent dementia and Alzheimer's in the future.
