I just read that changes made to Medicare in 2006 actually made weight loss surgery less expensive as well as being safer. This was just published in Reuters today. Before 2006, doctors were only reimbursed for gastric bypass surgery but now they receive reimbursements for laparoscopic gastric banding (lap band), too. The risk dropped from 15 deaths per 1000 surgeries to 7.
