  • acceptance based behavioral therapy

Researchers have found that there is a certain style of behavioral therapy called Acceptance Based Behavioral Therapy, which is showing some promising results for people who want to lose and manage their weight.

This therapy teaches a person to focus on their personal values and the things that you want for yourself in your personal life. The first step of this therapy is to accept that losing weight will not be easy and that certain sacrifices will need to be made.

In the randomized study involving 190 participants of overweight or obese men and women, found that these participants lost over 13% of their initial weight over their course of one year. So for someone who was 180 pounds, they lost like 24 pounds. This therapy has shown to be better than conventional behavioral therapies, that typically resulted in 9 to 14 pounds of weight loss.

I found this study to be really interesting and it makes a lot of sense to me. What do you guys think of this therapy? Do you think it could actually be something beneficial for those of seeking to drop unwanted pounds?

That's really quite fascinating and I can believe it. Our minds, moods and behaviors matter a lot when it comes to achieving goals and even how we go about accomplishing them. I think there should be more diets based on behavioral changes and less about telling people not to eat certain foods or to drastically lower their calories. So many dieting techniques make us miserable and that's no a good way to lose weight.

While this does make sense, I don't see how it can be very effective. Weight loss has always been one of those things that is always easier said than done. It's easy to be motivated about making changes (no matter what these changes are to start) but it become so much more difficult as time goes on.

I also want to point out that while the study has found a lot of success, those who took part were monitored. It is easier to keep up with something when you're being monitored. I wonder what the actual results would be if people did this on their own.

That's a really interesting study. I would be interested in trying that. Is there any place where I can try that or do you think a doctor might know?

I'd recommend talking to your doctor about it. Otherwise you could probably do some keyword searching online. I also agree that it sounds kind of interesting. It seems like so many things we struggle with in our lives is made worse by what's going on in our brains or is linked to our emotions/hormones, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if they found out that the root cause of over-eating and lack of motivation stems from our behaviors, which are affected by how we think. I also wonder how much of it is and is not in our control.

I also wonder how much of it is and is not in our control Tiff. I know that it's up to us what choices we make, but I feel like right from a young age the media, our culture and our family and friends have an effect on the way we think and once we have a certain set of belief, it become hard to change a behavior that developed from it. It's kinda like when you look at a picture of yourself and everyone tells you how great you look but you just don't see it.
