  • Stomach sucker

Wow, I just came across this news about the FDA approving some device that is inserted into the stomach and allows patients to drain a portion of their stomach contents before the body can absorb it into calories. It's called the "AspireAssist" and research found that patients in a study lost an average of 31 pounds a year of using it. This sounds seriously freaky to me. Am I the only one who thinks so?

Here's the link to the research in case you want to have a look for yourself! Stomach Sucker: How Does New Weight-Loss Device Work?

A stomach sucker? Wow...have we really hit the point in our society that we need to suck stuff out of your stomach now? How about we just stop eating all the extra crap we don't need and then we won't have to rely on these kinds of devices...

I have to agree with the critics on this one. I think a lot more research needs to be done before this device is considered to be a “game-changer” or even safe for weight loss. I think such a device is going to give people the excuse to eat whatever they want because they can just suck it out of their stomach. It won’t teach people to make important lifestyle changes it will enable their bad habits. The critics also raise a good point about this device potentially inducing eating disorders in people…I just think it’s a bad idea.

Yeah. I also agree that this sounds like a bad idea. People have low enough willpower as it is. This device will just give them the excuse they need to eat whatever they want. I can totally see this stomach sucker thing being abused by those who use it...It seems like a good idea that was not well thought out.

I actually think this could be a major breakthrough and I don't think people will abuse it as much as some of you might think. Sure, they're always be the person who will use it incorrectly, but think about it: if you could empty out some of the food you ate so you don't absorb it as calories, it could actually help you to lose weight and it may be safer than taking all those diet pills that don't work very well and that can have massive side effects. Naturally this device should be used in conjunction with better diet, exercise and behavioral changes, and I think a person should be monitored by their doctor while using it, but I think it's great that it may one day be an option.

I'm inclined to agree with those who are opposed to this product. I can see far too many people abusing it than those who would actually benefit from it. This seems to be more of a crutch than an actual solution. Scientists need to start thinking up ways to motivate people to eat healthier and exercise. Giving them a device that lets them empty some of the contents in their stomach is a cheat that isn't needed.

Well I'm glad to see that everyone's got an opinion on this haha. I'm also glad that I'm not the only one who finds this freaky. I never thought about the possibility that people could use it as an excuse to not alter their diet because they can just empty out the contents of their stomach! But yeah, I guess that is a possibility...ugh. This just sounds gross and like a bad idea.
