I lost 50 lbs during the last couple of years with the help of prescription appetite suppressants and diet and exercise. It has been very hard to keep the weight off, I gain a bit back, then practically starve myself to get rid of it again. Once you have lost the weight how do you stay away from falling back into old habits?

Old habits do die hard don't they? You have to remember it's a lifestyle change so you cannot go back to eating the way you did before. Loosing weight and keeping it off for us heavies is like a part time job- you always have to watch yourself. It sucks and I know it's super hard, but if you watch skinny people, these people naturally practice this "part time job" without having to think about it. But they do work at it, it is just easier for them. Watch them, they don't over fill their plates, they don't eat every single morsel of food when they go out to eat, they eat slower, and they make conscientious food choices. Whatever you do, don't get into the mindset that "now I've lost weight I can eat again," infact, now is the time that you need to work harder then ever to not get back up there on the scale.

Also having a "red flag" weight can be helpful:
Once you are down to a goal weight, you need to pick a weight and vow to never get heavier than it again. This is your red flag. It is normal for your body to fluctuate five to ten pounds. I recommend picking a weight that is ten pounds heavier than what you “normally” weigh and vow to never weigh more than it again. Setting a red flag weight allowed me to keep off every pound for over 1 year.
