  • Low fat doesn't always mean healthy

a lot of dieters swear by low-fat foods. I think that some low-fat foods are healthy and I think others are not as healthy as some people tend to, or want to, believe. For instance, I think foods that is naturally low in fat is good for you, but pre-packaged products that are reduced fat, aren't. The reason is that just because something has had some of the fat taken out, this doesn't mean that it's necessarily better for you. The reason is that they've added something else in to keep the flavor. Most times it's more sugar. Make sure to read your labels!

I agree bruceh. In my experience, pre-packaged foods that are low in fat are often high in sugar. It feels like you can't win! I guess that's why you just have to watch what you eat and eat things in moderation.

include olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, protein-rich legumes, fish and whole grains with moderate amounts of wine and red meat. The flavors are rich, and the health benefits for people choosing a Mediterranean diet, one of the world's healthiest, are hard to ignore—they are less likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol or become obese. If you’re trying to eat foods that are better for your body,
just start with the mediterranean diet foods.

I've found that natural low-fat foods like fruits and vegetables are a healthy option, but anything that is pre-packaged and low-fat is more of a concern. The other problem is I think people just automatically assume something is better for you when it is low in fat, which is not necessarily true. For starters, not all fats are bad for you. Most food should be eaten in moderation and in limited quantities.

I agree. It's the pre-packaged stuff that you really need to watch, because companies may take something out but they often add something in to compensate for the loss of flavor that happens when you reduce fat. A good idea is to compare the original product ingredients list with it's low-fat counterpart.
