  • Keep your house colder

Here’s an idea I had and it is working for me. I have turned down my thermostat by a few degrees. Not too much but by enough that it’s cool for me if all I do is sit down and watch TV. So what I’ve done is I’ve made it so that it’s uncomfortable for me to stay still because it’s just too cold. So when I start to feel chilly, I get up and move around and do things until I build up the warmth again.

It may not burn a huge number of calories, but it makes me more aware of all of the time that I spend sitting down and being completely inactive. By doing that, I can start to teach myself to get up and move around more. I bet that this will make a difference to my health and it will also support my trying to stay more active. I am already exercising every day but it can’t hurt for me to walk around my house doing things or jogging on the spot so that I can get warm again!

I didn’t actually believe you when I first read this, yesterday, but I was stubborn so I tried it anyway and you’re actually right. When you’re just slightly uncomfortable from being too cold, you do get up and move around more. The other benefit that I have noticed from doing things this way is that it will cost me less to heat the house throughout the winter.

I can’t say the same thing about the summer, though. The last thing that I want to do when I’m overheated is to move around so I guess that would mean that I’d need to really run the air conditioner, more. I guess that is just a wintertime strategy.

That’s a good idea for good health. Making sure that you get up and move around on a regular basis isn’t just a matter of weight loss. YOu really aren’t supposed to stay seated in the same place without moving every half hour to hour. There was just a study that said that people who do that are actually living shorter lives.

But if you want another benefit to turning your heat down in the winter so that it’s colder, it is that your body will need to work a little bit harder to be able to keep up your own personal body heat, so you need to burn more calories just to stay warm. So you’ll be helping yourself out on 2 levels, not just one…and you’ll be healthier too.

When my house is turned down to being very cold, then all I end up wanting to do is snuggle up in a blanket so that I don’t want to move around. I want to stay bundled and warm!

I agree with Tracy. This would just make me snuggle up, not get up! :D
