  • Foods that sound bad but aren't

Since I recently read an article saying that chocolate is actually not bad for a diet when you eat it in proper amounts and in the right form (which I researched based on a post that I read at this forum – thanks everyone!) I’m starting to realize that there really are a lot of foods that have bad names when it comes to dieting but that really aren’t the villains that they’ve been made out to be.

I thought I’d get the ball rolling with chocolate and try to encourage others to share what they know about some foods with bad names so that we can help each other to all dispel the myths.

    Anyone know another one?

What about avocados? Every time I bring them up with a friend of mine, she crinkles her nose and says that they're high in fat. But it's good fat! If you have a bit, it's good for you!

Red meat! It's not bad for you. Just have to eat the extra lean kind, good quality, and small portions. it has lots of nutrients and especially iron.

Dairy! So many people say that things made out of milk aren't good for you because of their fat content, but they are also huge in nutrition. The key is to choose the right portion size and watch the fat content. 1% milk is wonderful for you!

Popcorn. If you eat it plain, it's actually a very low calorie, filling snack that is high in fiber. The bad stuff isn't from popcorn, it's from putting salt, sugar, flavorings, butter, or margarine on it.

One thing that I've wondered about but I've never figured out is yogurt. I've heard a lot of people go on about how good it is for health and weight loss, but at the same time i've heard just as many people say that it's all a marketing scam and that it's not actulaly good for you because it's high in fat and/or sugar.

Is yogurt a healthy product that is good for weight loss or not?

I firmly believe that yogurt is actually a healthy food. The trick is to know the difference between healthy yogurt and the type that should be considered a dessert treat. Essentially, any yogurt that contains fruit or flavoring should be considered to be nearly on the same plane as chocolate or butterscotch pudding. It's a smidge healthier, but not much more than that. The reason is that it's really high in sugar. Flavored yogurts contain an insane amount of sugar! Check it out the next time you read the label and keep in mind that 4 grams is a teaspoon of sugar! If you want flavored yogurt that is healthy, eat plain yogurt (check the ingredients and look for no sugar or sweeteners) and then toss in a handful of berries. THAT is good for you.
