  • Sodium alternatives

Are there alternatives to salt? I don't just mean spice and herbs for flavor, but something specific for salt in the same way that stevia can be used to sweeten something instead of actual sugar.

Uh...I don't think there is an alternative to sodium other than just have less salt in your diet and adding my flavor with herbs and spices...

Yeah, I have to say that herbs and spices are really the way to go. All sodium alternatives are things like MSG and disodium glutamate...and honestly, these are just loaded with salt. Essentially, I would say just lower your salt intake if you want an alternative. Eventually, when you reduce the amount of salt you eat, you'll be able to taste other flavors more and you'll naturally need less.

There are alternatives to actually dumping table salt on your food, but mostly it's about adding other flavors to make your food pop so you don't need the sodium for flavor. So, yeah, this includes spices, herbs, etc. That said, if you are someone who reallllly likes the taste of salt, you might find it hard at first to ween yourself off the salt. Just give it time though, once you reduce the amount of sodium in your diet, you'll likely find that you crave it less, so you'll naturally use less. You might also find that high-salt foods are too salty and you won't like the taste anymore!

Alright so essentially there aren't any real salt alternatives. I was curious more than anything. I did assume that the healthiest alternatives must be herbs and spices.
