Out of curiosity, is exercise ABSOLUTELY necessary for dieting? Can you lose weight if you just watch what you eat? I don’t mean if you’re completely sedentary, but say you already go for a walk 4 days a week. It’s a good walk but nothing crazy. If all you do is change your eating, can you lose weight?

If you want to diet effectively and then keep off the weight that you've lost, then ya, you are going to have to exercise at least most days of the week. You should get a minimum of 7 hours per week, but don't just aim for that if it's possible for you to beat it by even 15 more minutes per day.
If all you change is what you eat, you will be able to lose weight, but it will be unbelievably slow compared to what you can accomplish if you exercise, too. Even if you cut your food back by a huge amount.
Exercising isn't just a matter of burning off fat, but it also speeds up your metabolism so you burn off the food you eat faster.

You should definitely exercise to lose weight because you're going to want to build up your fitness level during your diet. That's important because once you're done dieting to lose weight, if you don't keep up your exercises, then any extra amount of food you eat will just make you gain the fat back on again.
