  • Battling the blues

Usually I can keep my motivation pretty high for sticking to my eating plan and my exercises, but there are days when it feels like the universe has pointed directly at me so that tons of fussy little things go wrong and it takes the wind out of my sails. On those days, it’s very hard to keep to a diet when all I want to do is eat comfort food and escape in front of the television.

Can anyone recommend some good ways to battle the blues and keep up with a weight loss program even when everything feels like it sucks?

I personally like to eat a lot of raw vegetables in my meals - especially my lunch and supper - when I'm feeling the blues. This may seem odd, but I find that because they give me so much energy, without a crash, it helps me to perk right back up without sinking back into a gloomy state.

The veggies are a lot better when I have a good dip to go with them. A low cal salad dressing works great for me in that vein.

Also, try just smiling. Put on a big smile and you'll find yourself feeling more like you mean it!

Try to eat foods that you know you respond well to. In my case, I try to keep carbs under control. I haven't cut them out or anything, but if I eat a huge amount of pasta in my meal, for example, I feel drained while i'm digesting. The more fatigued I am, the less happy I feel. Also, try to watch your portion size. If you eat until you're so full you're ready to explode, it will also have a negative impact on your overall mood.

Duke researchers recruited 156 men and women over the age of 50 who were suffering from moderate clinical depression. Their symptoms included depressed mood, the feeling of slowness, difficulty sleeping, and loss of appetite. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: aerobic exercise, the antidepressant Zoloft, or a combination of the two..........
