  • Real or digital instructor

I'm gonna take up yoga. What I want to know is what would be better, to go to an actual class and learn it from a live instructor, or would I still get the same benefit from an instructor via video. I would prefer the convenience of doing it at home, but at the same time if that's not as good as going to a class, I'd like to know that.

What do all of you think is better: A class or a video?

As much as I would personally rather a video over a class, I think if you actually want to perform an exercise correctly, it would be in your best interest to be taught by a live instructor. They can correct anything you're doing wrong and you can ask them questions.

....that said, if you really hate the idea of going to a class, I personally think choosing the video option is better than no exercise at all. That being said, do make sure that you choose a beginner video to reduce the risk of potential injury.

It really depends on the way you learn best, but I personally have never had any problem following videos. Do what will motivate you the most to actually exercise. If you're more motivated in the comfort of your own home, choose videos. If paying for a class and heading out to it will be the drive you need to exercise, then do that.

Definitely a video for me. I hate classes.

I say real instructor. Nothing beats being able to talk to someone directly about exercises you're learning. It's REALLY easy to make the wrong move when you're watching a video.

I've decided I'm going to start with a real instructor. There are classes being offered at my local recreation center that let me pay as I go. So I pay per class. This way I can go and see what it's all about without having to pay for a whole bunch of sessions in case it turns out I hate it. It also means if I miss or skip classes (if I do like it) that I'm still not out of pocket. If I find I don't like the in-class experience, I'll look into getting a video.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

I know you've already made your decision 1000kw but I just wanted to say that I personally like digital instructors better. I think I've had one too many bad in-class exercise experiences to want to do it again.

I know exactly what you mean chefmel. Honestly, I just quit my most recent Yoga class. The instructor was late all the time and I felt like she was pushing us to do things that none of the class was ready for. I know instructors need to make money, but I hate it when it's obvious that that's all that they are there for. I've gone back to searching for a video.
