  • Cleaned the whole house today- does that count as exercise?

    So I didn't have any scheduled work out today (I try to do something about 3x week) but I cleaned my house top to bottom. Vacuumed, mopped floors, did the bathrooms, cat litters etc. Definitely worked up a sweat. So do you think that counts as some sort of exercise? Hopefully maybe I burned a calorie somewhere in there...

    Yes it for sure counts as exercise! I found this calorie breakdown for performing various chores so I am certain you "burned a calorie" in there somewhere

    * Sweeping: 240
    * Packing/Unpacking: 220
    * Scrubbing floors on hands and knees: 325
    * Cleaning, light (dusting, wiping down counters, picking up clothes): 100
    * Cleaning, general (washing dishes, doing laundry): 200
    * Cleaning house, heavy effort (vacuuming, hanging laundry, repetitive bending over): 260
    * Child care: 205
    * Shoveling snow: 415
    * Raking lawn: 235
    * Mowing lawn: 325
    * Moving large household item: 400
    * Cooking: 150
    * Grocery shopping: 90

          WOW....that was more than just 'a calorie'. Good post. My mom is a complete foodie. She's practically eating all day along but never puts on any excess weight. FYI she doesn't even work out ...AT ALL. House work all day and she's fit and healthy. Me on the other hand barely eat and as you can guess not very healthy.

            It certainly counts as exercise in my book. It doesn't stop me from going for a walk, since I still love that experience (and I feel like I can breathe fresher air to get the dust and cleaners out of my lungs haha). If it makes you work up a sweat, or if you are using your muscles for a period of time, you sure are exercising.

              if only typing counted due to its high use of finger muscles

                This winter, I've shoveled a huge amount of snow. I think winter should count as a free gym membership

                There are a lot of tasks that take a lot of muscle and energy to do them. They should count just the same as doing actual workouts, and I really think that they do.

                  Cleaning your house top to bottom will definitely be a good workout. Not only that, you're switching up your routine so it helps reduce the possible plateau.

                  I recently cleaned the house and within 24 hours, my back and arms were really sore. It felt great. Body feels good and the house is really clean.
