  • coconut water

I just heard that coconut water is just as good if not better for your hydration and performance than sports drinks. Has anyone ever tried this? How do you get coconut water, or do you have to buy a coconut and drain it?

It's true. In fact, the water from coconut (not to be mistaken with coconut milk, which is something completely different) has been used for centuries for both children and adults. It is extremely healthy and studies have shown that it performs in the same way as sports drinks but without all of the chemicals and added sugar.

It is great for the liver, immune system, and for hydration. It decreases immune sensitivity in the body, too. That's good for health and weight loss for that matter. It won't cause the weight gain or tooth decay associated with sugary sports drinks, either.

It's rich in electrolytes and isn't expensive when you buy it in ethnic food stores and health stores.

That's really great! I'm going to check it out at the store and see if I like it. I hope it isn't expensive. That'll make it hard to afford it on a regular basis.

It's not cheap. It's better to buy in large bottles than individual sized packages.

I found that watching for sales at health stores makes it affordable. It comes in good sized bottles and you don't need a lot of it to benefit.

I just tried coconut water for the first time and it tastes amazing. Thanks for the tip just in time for summer!

Coconut has a lot of electrolytes than gatorade. You can usually find them at stores like sprouts or one of those organically aware grocery stores.

The biggest downside is the cost. It usually costs around $2 a tall can here.

                    Holy cow, $2 a can?

Can you water it down to make it last more since it has more electrolytes than gatorade?

Yea you can always water it down but it wouldn't taste the same.

It'd be really cool if they would make more of a market of that kind of product instead of making us have to do all this research to find the best options. It shouldn't be easier to learn about sports drinks than it is about coconut water! It's not like the stuff is expensive.

The big brands would do well to get their hands on it and market it as a healthier, lower cal alternative.

Is it possible to make your own coconut water if you want to make sure that you really get a pure product? For example, is it the same thing if I actually buy a coconut and drain out the water, or is there another process that it has to go through?

I personally like juicing and I know that coconut isn't the same thing, but I was hoping that I could buy the coconut itself as opposed to having to use a canned product that has had the metal and plastic leeching into its contents.

I've been looking into this and if you shop at ethnic stores a lot of them sell cans or bottles of coconut water for very cheap. 2 for $1 or 80 cents a lot of the times. If you're finding ones that are very expensive then just avoid them and move on because there are great deals on it elsewhere. YOu just have to find the right place.

I have to say that I've really appreciated this discussion about coconut water. I've not only started mixing it with drinks to make them healthier but I've also started to cook with it!

One question I have about that is can you cook electrolytes out of coconut water? Also, I heard coconut oil isn't good for you in high quantities. Is there oil in coconut water?
