I'm thinking about trying this product, or at least the Proactol XS version of it. I've previously tried appetite suppressants with little success. Can I expect to see any significant weight loss with a fat binder or am I getting my hopes up?

I don't think you're getting your hopes up as long as your expectations and your weight management plan is realistic. Remember that even if the product does work to block fat, which it should do to some degree if you follow the directions correctly, you still need to watch what you eat, how much you eat, and exercise. What you do beyond taking the pill is what really matters in terms of how successful you'll be.

I agree with Chefmel. How successful you are will depend on the diet and exercise regimen you combine with the pills. Also, make sure that you take the pills as recommended. If they do actually work, then you shouldn't feel as hungry so it should be easier for you to eat less and eat healthier. Eating fewer calories and exercise should help you to drop weight faster.

I've heard that you can lose up to 20 pounds a month, but that's not a very realistic number in my opinion, because that's a lot of weight to lose in such a short period of time. If you lose that much, chances are you're not losing only fat, but water weight, which can come right back. I would probably guess that if your worked hard and lost weight in a healthy way (proper low-cal diet and regular exercise), you'd maybe lose 10 pounds in one month, which is still a lot, considering that would be just over 2 pounds a week. Keeping in mind, of course, you may lose more or less weight depending on your current weight and your level of activity, etc.
