  • Does Qsymia actually contain a drug used to treat epilepsy

I've been looking into new prescription diet pill products and I came across Qsymia. I saw that is has phentermine but it also contains another drug called topiramate, which I heard is used to treat people who have seizures. Is this true? And if it is, why are they using a drug for epilepsy in a pill designed to help a person lose weight? Does anyone else find that unsettling?

Yes, it's true. Qsymia does contain a drug that is prescribed to help treat seizures. It's also supposed to have weight loss benefits, as well, but personally I find it to be very sketchy. I wouldn't take this diet drug. It really just seems like that drug was approved by the FDA because doctors wanted a new weight loss drug they could prescribe their patients.

I think that topiramate helps a person eat less. I don't know if it's necessarily an appetite suppressant, but I think it might help to control hunger cravings (from what I understand). That said, it is linked to A LOT of potentially harmful side effects, such as effecting vision, causing suicidal thoughts, kidney stones, decreased sweating (so it's harder for your body to cool down), and withdrawal symptoms. Personally, Qsymia sounds like bad news to me.

Yes it's true that that drug has been used to treat seizures. I wouldn't trust this diet pill. I would definitely talk to my doctor about other alternatives if she ever recommended this to me.

Yeesh. Diet drugs really scare me sometimes. It really does seem like they are throwing anything together and approving it just so that they will have something new to offer. Do they even care about people's safety anymore??
