  • How many prescription diet drugs are there?

This may seem like a stupid question but how many prescription diet drugs are there? You usually hear about two or three but are there a lot more than that? What are my options on a prescription strength level?

I don’t think that’s a stupid question. I had to look it up to find out. I think that there are something like a dozen of them but they all seem to have generic forms and then a whole pile of brand name versions on top of that. Mostly, it looks like there are two main categories that are the stimulant ones that help with energy and appetite, but then there are also the fat blocker ones. I can’t seem to find ones other than that.

Anne's right on two accounts. 1 - it's not a stupid question. The weight loss market is very confusing and changing rules and with new products being added and old one either being changed or discontinued, it's really hard to know what is and what is not available. 2 - the two primary diet drugs are fat blockers and appetite suppressants. Each are available in several generic and brand name forms. If you are serious about taking diet medications, you should first think about which kind of support you want and then ask your doctor about what they recommend.

Um...I don't know what all of your options are but the ones I know of include Phentermine (Adipex), Orlistat (Xenical), Belviq, Contrave, Saxenda and Qsymia.

I think Lia covered the most popular ones. There's likely more than that cause don't forget that there are both brand name and generic options. I would ask your doctor what your options are. It's also a good idea to check and see what's available by looking for prescription appetite suppressants versus prescription fat blocker. Remember, while these pills are all meant to help you lose weight, their methods may be different.

Thanks everyone. That answers my question :) I think I'm going to investigate a few of those.
