I know that Adipex is brand name and Phentermine is generic, but aren't they the same drug? Why would a doctor prescribe Adipex when phentermine can do the job for cheaper?

They are. I personally would choose the generic version. However, you be required to take Adipex depending on your insurance or your doctor's instructions or vice versa. Sometimes insurance companies will only cover the cost of the brand name or the generic version. However, in terms of effectiveness it should be the same.

If you do want to take a generic, it's best to ask your doctor to recommend one to you and then make sure that when the pharmacy fills it they choose the one you want. After all, there is more than one generic pill out there.

It should be. If this does happen, I don't imagine it is something that happens often, and especially not with a medication that has been around for years. If you are concerned about that, I would ask your doctor. Honestly, the only difference between a generic and a brand name is the non-active ingredients.
