  • Are diet drugs really better than surgery

The more I read about prescription diet drugs, the less convinced I am of their efficacy and safety. Are these drugs really helpful for people who want to lose a lot of weight, in the long run? Or should you just explore the option of surgery for a more permanent solution?

I get your question. That said, I think it honestly boils down to the individual and their specific circumstance. Diet pill work for some people, with others need surgery. It depends on your age, health, whether or not you've had success with pills before and also your budget. Weight loss surgeries are not free and they're not always covered.

I don't think either is necessarily better. Both have goods and bads. As tobetinytina says, it all depends on a person's individual circumstance, preferences and the size of their wallet. Surgery can be uber-expensive, especially when you probably will need more than one and some of it is considered cosmetic.

I agree. It really does boil down to what is best for each person individually and (sadly) what the can afford in many cases. Plus, surgery is way more invasive than taking diet drugs, even though they have side effects. Plus, any time you have surgery there are always risks involved. Plus, just because you have surgery, it doesn't mean that it will work. You still have to watch what you eat and exercise to make sure the weight doesn't return.

Really? Why do you feel it's the most dangerous option? I mean, some people take diet drugs that can have seriously dangerous side effects.

It's true, but surgery opens you up to a lot of other high risks, such as the risk of a botched job and infection. Even if you have the best surgeon in the world, there's no guarantee that everything will go okay without complications. If you have a bad side effect to a drug, once you stop taking it, it goes away. That's not the same thing for surgery, it's far more complicated, not to mention expensive. Obviously, if it is the right choice for you, this doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, but there's a good reason why doctor's typically like to exercise all options before resorting to surgery.

The diet pills surgery argument really does boil down the individual, money and what you and your doctor think is the safest for your health.
