Trying to squeeze in workouts is tough. In fact, it can feel like it’s absolutely impossible. When your schedule is packed from the moment you wake up to the second you go to bed, when are you supposed to fit in extra time to exercise?

You’re busy. Every day. All day. If there’s a minute when you’re not busy, you’re exhausted because it’s likely right before bedtime. So how are you supposed to squeeze in workouts when you can’t seem to fit anything else into your life? What are you supposed to do without sacrificing a ton of sleep or your only chances to sleep?

Your work and home life can easily fill your calendar, including on weekends. This makes it feel as though being able to squeeze in workouts is out of the question. The fact of the matter is that if you know the right techniques, you can fit fitness into your life. This is the case even if you’ve never considered yourself to be an active person before.

Use the following tips to squeeze in workouts no matter how demanding your schedule may be:

Use your workout time wisely

When you don’t have a lot of time, make sure your workouts get the most out of every minute. Many people find that high intensity interval training (HIIT) style workouts help them to get the most out of every minute they exercise. These types of workout let you get the equivalent of 30 to 45 minutes of regular cardio results into a session closer to 20 minutes long.

Do these 4-5 times per week and you’ll meet your minimum healthy cardio quota while giving your muscles a workout, too.  If two of those days are on the weekend, you’ll likely have a better chance at fitting them in.  By the time your week gets started, you’re already halfway there!

Do it first

Even if you’re not a morning person, make your workout one of the first things you do when you get up. That way, no matter what happens during the rest of your day, you’ll already be done the workout. You won’t have the excuse of unexpected tasks added to your schedule to stop you from fitting your exercises into your day.

This doesn’t mean that you need to take a trip to the gym first thing in the morning.  But if you get up and dive right into HIIT, twenty minutes later, you’ll be in the shower, ready to face your day, full of energy and feeling great about how well you’re treating yourself.

Participate in challenges or competitions

One of the most important parts of keeping up with regular exercise, especially when you’re busy, is motivation. If you’re driven enough to exercise, you’ll make it happen. Therefore, find ways to motivate yourself! Many people find that taking part in competitions can drive them to keep up their training because they want to be able to perform well when the day arrives.

Have a close look at your schedule and decide on the times when you are most likely to have a moment available to squeeze in a workout. Once you know the best time for you, join a class, club or sports team that practices or takes part during that time.

Be consistent

Once you add exercise to your schedule, commit to it. Make it just as important as everything else. It’s an activity you’re incorporating into your regular lifestyle.  It’s just as normal as brushing your teeth each day.
